Secondary IX - XI

The Secondary School Curriculum is aligned with the NATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY 2020, which is based on the principle that education must develop not only cognitive capacities - both the ‘foundational capacities ’of literacy and numeracy and ‘higher-order cognitive capacities, such as critical thinking and problem solving – but also social, ethical, and emotional capacities and dispositions.

The secondary school curriculum acknowledges the fact that subjects like Language, Mathematics, Science, Social science, and IT help the cognitive development of the child and, therefore require a greater academic emphasis at the Secondary level. The teaching-learning pedagogy at this level in Xavier’s is in alignment with the constructivist approach recommended by the National Curriculum Framework 2005 and CBSE board. We at Xavier’s understand that education at this level occupies a very important role in a student’s life as it is the link between primary education and higher discipline-based education. A child’s interest in a particular subject needs to be fostered well in this stage as this is the time when he/she decides the stream to pursue higher studies. The curriculum encompasses seven major learning areas, from a scholastic and co-scholastic point of view.

Scholastic Domain Co-scholastic Domain
Languages Health and Physical Education
Social Science Art Education
Mathematics Music & Dance
Science
IT

CO-SCHOLASTIC DOMAIN
The school curriculum is planned as per the guidelines and the scheme of studies in the CBSE curriculum. The Scholastic domain deals with the academic progression of the child from middle school to secondary school. The subjects taught include Languages, Science, Mathematics, Social Science and IT. It is our constant endeavor to create a conducive environment that facilitates effective learning in the classrooms.

Languages
Breaking the barriers of old school teaching methodology the chapter is taught in various ways- reading aloud in class, dramatization, discussion, debating, précis writing.

Science
Science at this level is taught to clear the concepts and help in the skill development of a child by touching all the learning domains of a child. The learning domains include Psychomotor, Cognitive and Sensory. Students are given hands-on experience with the help of a wide array of activities and experiments held in the classes and the laboratories. The Students are encouraged to share and discuss science-based issues. Various techniques are designed to improve thinking skills around science that ultimately have long-term attainment. Field trips, Space Club, Exploration camps, Hands-on activities, and experiments are conducted on a timely basis to generate interest in the subject.

Mathematics
Students are explained various concepts while connecting them to day-to-day life. The learning domains in Mathematics include analytical thinking, critical thinking, Arithmetic conclusion, and logical reasoning. Students are encouraged to visualize the question, relate it to the topic, and then solve it. Various creative class activities on geometry, models on trigonometry, and lab manual activities are conducted on a timely basis to inculcate the interest of the students.

Social Science
The Social science curriculum builds the following capacities in young people:
1. Disciplinary knowledge & inquiry.
2. Interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
3. Respect for the underlying values of a diverse democratic society.
4. Interest in public affairs and competencies of self-government.

SENIOR SECONDARY CURRICULUM
The focus under the Senior Secondary Curriculum is on the deeper learning and development of young adults in a manner that builds 21st-century skills of communication, creativity, collaboration, and leadership within the framework of the CBSE Board pattern. There is a conscious effort to transform the students so that they are ready to enter the real world as responsible and aware citizens.

Each capacity contributes uniquely to responsible citizenship. In the classroom, we encourage reading newspapers, discussing current national and international news as well as business news. Survey-related activities for geography and economics for collecting information are undertaken. Debates are encouraged in the classroom to inculcate critical thinking.

IT
The new generation should not only be able to use these technologies adequately well, but they should also be trained as individuals who can design and develop both for and with these technologies. The first is to help students to develop their knowledge of computational thinking skills in different ways, to express themselves using technology, and to solve real-life problems from different anglesThis is well achieved through frequent trips to the computer lab and making theory engaging and fun, and more importantly, giving students a deep understanding of these concepts.
CO-SCHOLASTIC DOMAIN
The co-Scholastic domain is an integral part of the curriculum for secondary classes, all students participate in the domains of art, music, dance, theatre, and physical education. Through these activities self–confidence, cultural appreciation, and skills of teamwork and leadership qualities are enhanced. Inter-house and Inter-School competitions are held on a regular basis to provide a platform to the students.

Art Education
Art education is provided in classes IX-X as a compulsory subject as per the CBSE guidelines. The streams covered by the term arts education are music, dance, visual arts, and theatre. The school ensures that the subject is given significance in the curriculum and not just restricted to being so-called entertaining or prestige-earning activities.

Health and Physical Education
The aim of mainstreaming Health and Physical Education is to enable the student to attain an optimum state of health. Health and physical education is an important part of the curriculum for secondary classes.

Music /Dance
Utilizing music and dance in academics also helps children develop skills that are necessary for learning such as creativity, communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. Through the creative process, students are encouraged to use their imagination, collaborate with their peers to solve problems and discover multiple solutions to challenges.

At Xavier's, scholastic domains are integrated with co-scholastic domains for better understanding.
